Connection Through Shared Experience
Peer support is a relationship built on mutual understanding, lived experience, and the belief that no one should have to navigate life’s challenges alone.
Rather than approaching someone as a problem to be solved, peer support recognizes each person as a whole human being with their own knowledge, strengths, needs, and understanding of their life.
Through compassionate listening, shared experiences, and meaningful connection, peer support creates space to explore challenges, discover possibilities, and feel less alone.
What Makes Peer Support Different?
Peer support is grounded in mutuality rather than hierarchy. It’s not about someone else telling you how to live, deciding what’s best for you, or expecting you to follow a prescribed path.
Instead, it’s about building a connection where your voice matters, your experiences are respected, and your choices remain your own.
Peer support can include:
- Having space to talk and feel heard without judgment.
- Exploring your experiences, feelings, and personal goals.
- Sharing perspectives and learning from one another.
- Discovering resources, coping strategies, and new possibilities.
- Building connection, community, and a sense of belonging.
There’s no single right way to participate. You don’t need to have everything figured out or arrive with a specific goal.
What Is Abolitionist Peer Support?
At Unlock Psych, we practice abolitionist peer support—an approach grounded in the belief that care should prioritize connection, autonomy, and community rather than coercion, control, or punishment.
Abolitionist peer support recognizes that traditional mental health systems can cause harm, particularly when people are deprived of their choices, subjected to involuntary treatment, or treated as though a diagnosis makes them less capable of understanding their own lives.
Rather than reinforcing systems that take power away from people, we seek to cultivate relationships and communities that help restore it.
This doesn’t simply mean opposing harmful practices. It also means building alternatives rooted in mutual aid, shared knowledge, collective care, and respect for each person’s right to determine what support looks like for them.
At Unlock Psych, this means:
- Autonomy Before Compliance: Your choices and self-determination matter.
- Relationship Before Restriction: We believe in connection rather than control.
- Support Before Surveillance: Care should not depend on monitoring or policing people.
- Choice Before Coercion: You deserve to participate in decisions that affect your life.
- Community Before Isolation: We believe people deserve meaningful connection and support beyond institutional settings.
Abolitionist peer support isn’t about dictating what recovery should look like or expecting everyone to share the same beliefs. It’s about creating spaces where people can explore their experiences, define their own needs, and imagine possibilities beyond the systems and expectations that have harmed them.
Peer Support at Unlock Psych
Unlock Psych exists to create spaces where survivors of psychiatric harm can find understanding, connection, and support rooted in dignity and self-determination.
Whether you’ve experienced psychiatric hospitalization, coercive treatment, or other forms of psychiatric harm, you deserve to be met as a person—not reduced to a diagnosis, a label, or someone else’s assumptions about what is best for you.
Our approach honors lived experience as a source of knowledge and recognizes that each person is the expert on their own life. We don’t expect you to follow a prescribed path, adopt a particular recovery narrative, or have everything figured out.
Peer support at Unlock Psych is not psychotherapy, diagnosis, or medical treatment. It’s an opportunity to connect, explore, and discover possibilities on your own terms.
